Crete (Sisi)
Crete is a large, elongated Mediterranean island with several distinct tourist areas. Over the years, most of my visits have been to the eastern half of the island and most recently I have stayed at Sisi, a fishing village 27 miles east of Heraklion. Sisi is still emerging as a resort and is reminiscent of some small continental resorts before mass tourism took hold. It has one large hotel complex, the Sentido Vasia Resort and Spa, and a number of smaller hotels and apartment complexes. It is connected to the capital Heraklion and other nearby towns by a regular bus service and there is also a range of organized tours which visitors can avail of.

Anixi Apartments  Website Trip Advisor Page A pretty little apartment complex built in the traditional style, run by a lovely couple, Eleni and Vasilis. It is located on the shore (small beach 300 yards away) about 7 minutes’ walk west of the centre of Sisi. In Anixi there is an attractive bar/restaurant right beside the swimming pool and the ambience there is quite special. The apartments are within 2 minutes’ walk of a range of shops, including supermarkets. My accommodation of choice in Sisi. (Coast Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece) Sentido Vasia Resort and Spa  Website Trip Advisor Page This is a large hotel and spa complex which operates largely on an all-inclusive basis. It has all the trappings of a luxury hotel complex, with a large spa, 7 swimming pools, 4 restaurants, 6 bars and a night club. Some rooms even have their own individual swimming pool! The food is of a decent quality and the staff are very efficient and friendly. A good place to spend a relaxing week, particularly if you can get a good deal, price-wise. (Coast Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece)
Anatoli Drosia Amelia Anixi In Sisi, restaurants tend to offer free starters, desserts or even after-dinner liqueurs (ok, usually raki) so you should be careful not to order too much food. This is the case with all of the restaurants featured below and In some of them we were actually offered all three! Sisi also has some interesting places to go for a drink. The Irish bar Peggy Gordon’s (with live music most evenings) is well worth a try, the Skipper Cocktail Bar down at the harbour is a lovely spot and the pool bar of the Anixi apartments is probably the best of the lot - an absolute delight all day long but particularly at sunset.
Amelia  Trip Advisor Page Amelia is the “new kid in town” (note the sly Eagles reference there) as regards Sisi restaurants, having opened in mid-2017. It is situated on the coast road just up from the Phaestos supermarket. In an appealing way, Amelia combines a bright, modern decor with a menu of traditional Greek dishes. The service is welcoming and efficient and the quality of the food is first class. Well worth a try. (Coast Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece) Anatoli  Trip Advisor Page Anatoli is a small taverna located in a side street almost opposite Peggy Gordon’s (see postal address below!). It is run by Anatoli and his daughter, who are very welcoming hosts indeed. The menu is much more extensive than most Sisi restaurants, with a huge selection of starters, salads, omelettes, pasta, fish and meat dishes supplemented by a further broad range of really good pizzas cooked in the restaurant’s wood-fired oven. Can’t recommend it highly enough. (Opposite Peggy Gordon's Irish Bar, Main Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece) Anixi Pool Bar  Website Trip Advisor Page Anixi Apartments (see Hotels section above) offers comfortable, reasonably priced accommodation, and its attractive pool bar is emerging as a desirable eating venue in Sisi. The menu actually offers a fine range of all-day food, which naturally includes some of everybody’s favourite Greek dishes. The ambience of the pool bar is quite special, the welcome from Eleni, Vasilis and their staff is second to none and the freshly-prepared food is delicious and beautifully presented. (Coast Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece) Drosia  Trip Advisor Page Drosia is a very popular taverna offering a range of freshly-prepared, traditional Greek dishes at moderate prices. You eat in a pretty garden shaded by fruit trees and during our visit the owner cut some limes from the tree under which we were sitting to use in a dish one of us had ordered, so “freshly-prepared” means just that! The delicious food, attentive service and delightful ambience all combine to make for a wonderful dining experience. (Main Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece) Edem  Trip Advisor Page Edem Taverna is an absolute gem, one of the best budget restaurants I have found anywhere. The terrace in front of the restaurant is a quite beautiful spot for a leisurely meal. The food is freshly prepared and of excellent quality - the meze in particular is absolutely amazing - and food and drink prices are rock-bottom. The owners, Maria and Andreas, do everything to make your stay pleasant. Can be strongly recommended. (Coast Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece) Liofito  Trip Advisor Page Liofito is a delightful little taverna located about 450 metres along the main road from Drosia, just before you come to Neromilos (see below). The idyllic dining area is in an olive grove which makes for a wonderful ambience. The menu is not extensive but focuses rather on offering simple Greek dishes made using organic ingredients where possible, many of which come from the couple’s nearby farm. The food is of a high quality and Giorgos is an admirable host. Can strongly recommend. (Main Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece) Menios  Trip Advisor Page Menios is a beautiful taverna, located just up the street from Drosia, where you dine on a terrace shaded by a large canopy and surrounded by potted plants and hanging baskets. The menu consists of a range of home-cooked, traditional Greek dishes and all are prepared to a very high quality indeed. The staff are delightful - courteous, friendly and efficient and the result is a memorable dining experience. (Main Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece) Neromilos  Website Trip Advisor Page Neromilos is a lovely little taverna located about 500 metres along the main road from Drosia and Menios - don’t worry, it is well worth the walk. The dining area is a pretty garden where you eat to the soothing background sounds of a small decorative waterwheel. As with the other restaurants featured on this page, the menu in Neromilos is made up of a number of traditional Greek dishes and the freshly-prepared food is of a high quality. Currently the Trip Advisor number one in Sisi. (Main Road, Sisi, Crete 72400, Greece)
